Blog 11 Sunday 8th January

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

This week I received the vocals back from the vocalist, she did a few harmonies, and a backing track, as well as the lead vocals, they have come out sounding professional, and I'm happy with them. I have been working on adding more elements to the track, as well as processing the vocals. Also now I have the vocals, and backing track I have been working on the music video for "A Soul Rediscovered" I have used FL Studio, iMovie and the footage I have recorded.

Here is the backing track that I sent off to the vocalist.

As you can hear it is finished and isn't bad, I just wanted to change a few things, perfect the song, and edit it, so I'm a bit gutted my computer broke, but I think it's good enough anyway.

I watched some tutorials on how to make a bass in vital, and this is what I ended up making.

I then added the vocals to the backing track and started to mix them in FL Studio.

I started off with the mixer levels in the mixing console, then played around with panning and the stereo image.

I am going to work more on the vocals, I want to do some vocal processing to the song, I have an idea of what I want, I just need to find out how to do it, so this is what I will. be working on. But I am happy with the mix and how that sounds, as I'm not going to change the song, I decided to work on the music video, as I can always change the audio file of the song in the video at a later stage anyway, and I was really eager to use the footage I have been recording for months and create a music video.

I started off with an empty project and imported all my video footage from both my Go Pro and my DJI Mini 2 drone, and My phone.

I wanted to start the song off with a sunset, so I used video footage I recorded when I was in Crete in June. it's a nice start to the song.

So this is it so far, I'm not sure why there isn't sound, there should be.

I then added a few more clips and time-matched them all to my song, this was tricky but I got the hang of it, I added a slow-motion effect to the second clip and a transition in-between the third and fourth.

This is it progressing as I'm adding more elements.

You cant hear the sound but all these clips, match up to the audio perfectly. I will add the video with sound when I have finished it. not too sure why there is no sound.

I managed to go to a forest near Llanwrytyd and recorded a tree with the sun shining through on a leaf " the golden leaf" this matches up with the vocals "like a golden leaf, in a forest full of clouds"

I then added a reverse effect to two of the videos, also when the chorus comes in and she sings " I feel so alive" this is when I have added the boat boarding clip as this is an adrenaline-pumped activity that showcases feeling alive.

In the part that says about a starry sky, I have recorded two time-lapses of the night sky, one whilst I was camping in the summer, and one out of my window. This looks really professional and I'm really happy with it. The drone footage looks the best I think.

Towards the second part of the song, I have several clips from the same location, that I recorded on different occasions, One being of the valleys in Abergwesyn by wolves leap captured using the drone, one using the Go Pro which was recorded in September of swimming in the river and entering wolves leap straight on with a POV camera shot. Then one out of the water using the Go Pro of climbing up the rocks above wolves leap for a top view.

I have edited this in a way that jumps between the three so it's like a story from multiple angles, I am really happy with this, and also I have decided if I record a music video again, I am going to plan it like this, so it is like this all the way through with about 3 different stories going on, with them all coming together and completing at the end, it's a really nice effect. I have learnt a lot about recording video footage, over the last 4. months, and it's awesome I'm finally putting it all together for a music video.

The video ends with a walk to the beach in Pembrokeshire, and when the song has finished, you end up on the beach, it's a really nice effect and has worked out really well. this scene switched back and forth between the sunset from Greece and the beach in Pembrokeshire.

This is the final finished product. Although I may add some effects using. magic visualiser at a later date.

Conclusion.

In conclusion this week I have learnt some sound design techniques, how to bring the project back together after a major problem (computer breaking) and make the best out of a bad situation. I have learnt how to mix the vocals. I have also learnt how to use iMovie and add different effects, process the video so it is in time with the track, and I have some insights into how I would do things differently next time I make a music video.

The music video has turned out really nice although if I critically analyse it I think, I could have cut between clips more frequently, and I could have found a way to edit a golden leaf .

the transition between the sunsets before the drop is a bit out of sync. The part with. me jumping into the ocean from a boat is in portrait mode, it doesn't look very professional. I also would like to add some effects to go along with the music on the magic visualiser. I think in hindsight I should have written a storyboard to plan the music video better. But I do think it has turned out nice and is a learning curve.

Overall I have learnt a lot throughout the whole process of creating this video, from recording back in June to getting a Go Pro, to getting a drone and learning how to use these. Reading about how to get the best footage for different scenarios, applying these skills, planning a music video, and editing the final video. If I were to do it again I would probably plan it a little better and do some research on how to professionally record and edit a music video, but it is all a part of the process. The skills I have learnt are going to help massively in my future career, as it has given me knowledge in video editing and keeping in time, this could help with working in sound for moving image, or working on sound effects for films, and also as a freelance producer, as I wouldn't need to hire someone to produce a music video for me.

Over the next week, I want to have this track finished mixed and mastered, and roads mixed and mastered. I also want to finish my fourth track, name it, and finalise the whole project. If I have time, I may have orchestral interludes between each song, so the whole EP plays as one whole track.
