This week I have been looking for vocalists and recording footage for my music video and making some final tweaks to my first track.
I found my vocalist and sent off my lyrics they should be back by Monday then I can mix the track, mix the vocals and also work on editing the vocals. I also want to learn how to create vocal effects such as those used by Illenium and other artists similar to the future bass style.
I managed to get a lift to Abergwesyn which is my ideal chosen place to record footage for my music video, to do this I used my DJI Mini 2 Drone and my Go Pro Hero 10. I started by recording with my Go Pro and walking alongside a stream recording the stream from above, I also got some footage from a forest and a waterfall. I then took out the drone and recorded a bird's eye view of the valley which looks amazing, I wanted my music video to be about nature and someone being reborn but enjoying nature. I feel like the footage I got was really good and fit well with what I wanted, I aim to go to different locations over the next month or so and record different scenes regarding nature.
The vocalist I picked has a really smooth and sort of timid voice but can be powerful, and she can also reach really high notes, we spoke a bit before we both accepted that she would sing the lyrics. She asked me to send her time stamps alongside the backing track so she would know where to sing, and also a vocal melody guide. I made this using FL Studio.
She also asked me to send her two reference tracks with similar vocals to the style I wanted so she knows how to sing the lyrics.
I chose Illenium - fractures, and Dabin - hold, I chose these because I suppose some of my inspiration for this song came from them. she said she was thinking along the lines of Illenium when she heard my lyrics and song, so I knew I had chosen the right vocalist for this song. I'm really looking forward to hearing the vocals.
It was a learning process getting the right footage with the Go Pro but I would say I am improving. This was only the second time I had flown my drone, so I am still learning how to fly it, see how far away it can go, and feel more comfortable and safe flying it further away from the remote and also how to record footage for example in the videos I recorded I noticed afterwards that when I turn the drone, it's really sharp and quick on the video, where-as it needs to be a nice and smooth transition I would say there's lots of room for improvement needed there but I will learn this over the rest of the project. Overall I feel like I am happy with the footage I recorded but definitely need to watch some tutorials, and practice using the drone and Go Pro more.
Here is some of the footage I recorded with my drone
I really like the drone footage because it's really nice to get a bird's eye view of the landscape, the only issue with it is that the corners when I turn aren't as smooth as I would like them to be, but it's a learning curve.
Here's some footage of the waterfall.
The waterfall I thought was really nice, and it ends with looking over the valley, it fits with what I wanted for a music video initially. and it's really nice.
This is some footage of me walking along a stream and climbing the rocks, I want the music video to show. POV of someone doing lots of activities in nature, so this fits.
In conclusion, it's been a successful week for recording footage for my music video, there are a few things I would do differently next time, and I want to learn more about how to record good footage with a drone, and Go Pro. I can do this by watching YouTube tutorials, and by practising. I'm looking forward to receiving the vocals back on Monday. Next week I aim to edit the vocals and add some effects similar to Illenium and other Future bass vocals. Learn about different vocal effects and apply them to my vocals, and make a start on mixing and mastering the song. I also want to learn about altering the sound of a synthesiser using a sidechain ( I watched a tutorial and saw they did this, I want to know more about it and apply it to my track) I aim to watch some YouTube tutorials, and do a bit of research to find out how to achieve the sound I want, I have it in my mind, I just need to get it out on the DAW .
Overall I have learnt lots of useful recording techniques, which will come in handy in my future career, I think even if I end up in media through music production, and might not necessarily be recording footage, it's handy to know these skills. Also as a freelance producer, these skills will become very useful as I could create my own music videos.
